Transportation, flooding issues need addressing for fast city development

The Hochiminh City Institute of Development Studies (HIDS), Siemens and the German International Cooperation Agency (GIZ) arranged the symposium to announce the findings of a HCMC 21 project, a joint initiative between the city’s authorities, the German government and Siemens to map out the future development of this populated city. The HCMC 21 investment portfolio was proposed at US$ 163 bil for the city to become a world class transit oriented metropolis, with 49% of the amount for transportation, 21% for energy, 6% for flood control and 24% for other areas. The HCMC 21 initiative recommends about 8.1% of GDP be spent annually to develop HCMC into such a metropolis, with 73% of which borne by the public sector. But the investment would not be for HCMC alone but also for the benefit of the southern region of Vietnam and the nation as a whole. (Saigon Times Daily, 07/03/2011)  

Experts from Europe explain footwear rules to HCMC traders

European officials and business executives explained key import regulations and recommended strategies to help Vietnamese footwear exporters seize opportunities, overcome barriers and minimize risks in the EU at a seminar held under the framework of MUTRAP III. Mr. Olivier Willocx, CEO of the Brussels Chamber of Commerce said in the seminar: “Businesses can first export to Belgium which will be a good indicator of similar success in the greater European market.” He suggested Vietnamese businesses to take advantage of the Brussels Import Agency, an new initiative by the Brussels Enterprises Commerce and Industry to help businesses by establishing links between importers and exporters. More trees for urban areas

An US$ 6.9 mil project to plant trees on the East-West Boulevard in Hochiminh City will be carried out to encourage development in residential urban areas in the city’s east and south directions. Work is scheduled to begin in July and finish by the end of this year. Of that sum, about US$ 3.8 mil will be spent on installing an automatic irrigation system and a maintenance fund. The rest will be used to plant trees. The East-West Boulevard will be divided into four sections. The lanes will be divided by grass banks, ornamental gardens and rock gardens. New rules outline ratio of charter capital in State owned enterprises (SOEs)

Under the new Decision 14/2011/QD-TTg, which stipulates the ratio of charter capital that State will hold in SOEs, the State will hold 100% of charter capita in enterprises operating in sectors involving national defence and security and in military/economic enterprises that are located in strategic and /or remote areas. The State will hold 50% of stake in businesses that play a key role in ensuring the stability of the national economy, stabilizing markets: electricity, exploiting minerals, coal, bauxite, copper, iron, tin, gold, precious stones. Large wind farm project gets okayed

Belgium based Enfinity got the greenlight to build a large wind farm in Ninh Thuan Province. The project, capitalized at US$ 251 mil, will have total capacity of around 124.5 MW. This is Enfinity’s first power project in Vietnam and one of the largest wind power project in the country. (Vietnam Investment Review, 21-27/03/2011)
